Executive orders for prisoner transfers to U.S. veterans hospitals, 1931-1938.

A prisoner who is in ill-health may be removed to a hospital until he has recovered enough to complete his sentence. (Ala. Code, 4811, p. 4821 [1928]). In cases where the prisoner is a veteran, he is entitled to hospitalization in a U.S. Veterans Hospital. (Ala. Code, 2992(8), p. 489 [1928]). This series consists of executive orders for parole to the Veterans Hospital at Tuscaloosa, Alabama, granted by the governor. Information available on these records includes the convicts's name, county, offense, date convicted, sentence, statement identifying the criminal as a veteran entitled to treatment at a veterans hospital and approving the transfer, the signature of the governor, the date, and the attesting mark of the secretary of state. These records were created by Governors B. M. Miller (1931-1935) and Bibb Graves (1935-1939) upon recommendation of the Board of Administration (1923-1939).
